SAINSBURY'S PARTNERS WITH RENEWABLE RESOURCES TO MEET SUSTAINABILITY TARGETS THROUGH SOLAR INSTALLATIONS
Renewable Resources completes 6.9 MW PV installation at Sainsbury's supermarkets
Renewable Resources (Energy Solutions) Ltd has successfully completed installation of roof-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at 115 Sainsbury's stores across the South of England, producing a total of 6.9 Megawatts (MW) of power for the supermarket chain. The installation became a significant element of Sainsbury's 20 by 20 Sustainability Plan, which aims to reduce carbon (CO2) emissions, provide a sustainable solution for long-term energy security and protect from future rises in energy costs.
"This project secured Renewable Resources' position as the largest UK solar PV installer for commercial rooftops in 2011, while also demonstrating our ability to work on a tight schedule," said Paul Gribben, Chief Executive, Renewable Resources. "The main challenge of this project was to meet strict Feed-In Tariff deadlines. Our committed team of expert engineers and strong partnerships with key roofing membrane and solar PV panel suppliers allowed us to install a typical 50 kW system in less than three days – just half of the market average time".
To meet the strict Feed-In Tariff deadlines, Renewable Resources worked in collaboration with key industry players to identify solutions that best suited the needs of the major retailer and could be implemented quickly. Because roofs are not often designed to accommodate the relatively heavy solar panels, Renewable Resources applied its expertise in both roofing and solar technology to determine that PV panel mounting systems from Hilti and Sika roofing membrane layers would be ideal. The framework is specially made for roofs with limited load capacity and equipped with plates that distribute the load and protect the existing structure.
Renewable Resources completed the 6.9 MW solar PV installation at select Sainsbury's stores in South East and South West England, consisting of 50 and 150 kilowatt peak systems. Across these 115 stores, the resulting 6.9 MW of solar energy generated is equivalent to powering 2,000 homes or offsetting an average of 3,100 tonnes of CO2 per annum. Extensive knowledge of commercial roofing systems and solar power combined with reliable and high-quality technologies allowed Renewable Resources to complete the installation without alterations to construction or any disruption to the stores' operation.
